History of Roland Schmidt (China) Ltd.

After having finished his studies in early 1975 Roland Schmidt joined Schwab & Gick Germany as purchase manager in charge of importing basket ware for the company from sources in East Europe and in the Far East.

On January 1, 1979 a buying office was set up in Hong Kong in partnership between Dr. Gick Germany and Roland Schmidt as the residential director in Hong Kong.
The company was named Gick Co. (HK) Ltd. acting as Far East buying agent for several European companies and starting to export baskets and rattan materials out of Hong Kong.

With the effect of 01-01-1988 Roland Schmidt had acquired all shares of Gick Co. (HK) Ltd. and gradually transferred its business to a company called Roland Schmidt (China) Limited which had already been set up earlier as a holding company for property purchased in Hong Kong.
Gick Co. (HK) Ltd. was finally closed down in the earlier nineties and its assets transferred to Roland Schmidt (China) Ltd.

The company owns residental premises and two offices and leases warehouse space if and when required.

Production of rattan cane webbings and materials is contracted to one factory in China with Hong Kong ownership which currently employs 120 workers, its monthly output is mostly being taken up by Roland Schmidt (China) Ltd..

A new line of aluminium garden furniture woven with artificial rattan has been introduced recently and is being exported to a variety of countries wordwide.

Roland Schmidt now in his 31st year in Hong Kong is attending furniture shows in Germany and Italy on a regular basis.

Incidentally, Johann Schmidt, the grandfather of Roland Schmidt, produced rattan furniture in his own workshop with three workers near Coburg, Germany, during the years 1930 to 1936 and after the war again from 1946 onwards until he passed away in 1947.
